Nazareth Prep Awards Seven $5,000 Scholarships

Monday, May 14, 2018

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (May 11, 2017) – On May 9, Nazareth Prep high school recognized seven outstanding students with $5,000 scholarships. The scholarships, to be used for college education, technical training and apprenticeship support, were awarded at the school’s annual St. Joseph the Worker Scholarship Reception, held this year at Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild.

The 2018 scholarship recipients were, from the class of 2018, Shira Givner and Paul Covington; from the class of 2019, Ti’yanna Risher and Hayden Bogert; from the class of 2020, Carmi Upsher; and from the class of 2021, Justice Pennix and Ronnie Mazzotta.

St. Joseph scholarships are awarded to applicants who, in addition to maintaining good grades and attendance and demonstrating a strong commitment to Nazareth Prep’s values, excel at their internship assignments. Every Nazareth Prep student spends one day a week throughout the school year interning at one of nearly 100 Pittsburgh employers.

The scholarship reception included a display of the students’ capstone projects, a student art exhibition and raffle, and live performances. Outstanding internship partners and individual internship mentors were also recognized.

The St. Joseph scholarships are made possible through public and private donations to the Saint Joseph the Worker Fund, which supports scholarships and financial aid and bolsters a robust core academic program at Nazareth Prep. The Fund is named for Saint Joseph, the Patron Saint of Workers, and was created with the belief that education and hard work are Pittsburgh’ best hope for a better future, and that every youth with the desire to lead a moral, responsible and meaningful life should be given that opportunity.

These scholarships are among an array offered to students by Nazareth Prep. Others include the Daniel M. Rooney Ambassador Scholarship, awarded to incoming freshmen who have demonstrated achievement and potential, and the Earned Income Tax Credit, which is based on financial need. Through financial aid tailored to each family’s situation, Nazareth Prep is able to provide rigorous, personalized college and career preparation to any academically qualified student.
